Addressing the Housing Crisis: Over 40 Million U.S. Households Struggle with High Housing Costs

As of 2023, approximately 41.8 million households in the United States are considered cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. This represents about 32.8% of all U.S. households. Renters are particularly affected, with nearly half (49.7%) of renter households spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs. In contrast, 27.1% of households with a mortgage are cost burdened.

The burden varies by state; for instance, Florida has the highest share of cost-burdened renters at 61.7%. The Department of Housing and Urban Development defines households spending more than 30% of their income on housing as cost-burdened, indicating potential financial strain affecting their ability to afford other necessities.

ACRUVA’s mission is to increase and accelerate access to safe, stable, and healthy equitable housing for extremely low to moderate income families, elderly, formerly homeless, military veterans, children aging out of foster care, workforce, and special needs populations everywhere by building healthier, more stable, and equitable multifamily rental communities.
